The NHS has reported a significant milestone in the Martha’s rule initiative, with over 10,000 calls made to the helplines in the first 16 months of the scheme. A staggering one in three calls (3457) helped identify acute deterioration, leading to 1885 patients receiving changes in treatment, including 446 potentially lifesaving interventions to transfer patients to enhanced levels of care.

<4>According to NHS England, the data shows that between September 2024 and December 2025, there were 10,119 calls made to Martha’s rule helplines by patients, families, and staff. This number has more than doubled since June last year, with 4911 calls made in the previous period.

<4>The data also reveals that over 6000 calls about clinical, communication, or coordination concerns led to meaningful improvements in care or system navigation for patients and their families.
