For many individuals living with HIV-1, simplifying treatment regimens can be a significant challenge. While the majority of people with HIV now take a single daily pill or use a two monthly injection, some patients with resistant viruses have not benefited from these simpler treatments. These individuals often have comorbidities and have been taking antiretroviral treatment for decades.

<3>New Medical Drug Offers Hope for Patients with Complex Treatment Regimens

A recent phase 3 trial published in the Lancet1 has found that a new medical drug may provide a new treatment option for patients with HIV-1. The trial included 557 people across 15 countries with HIV-1, all of whom had low viral loads (HIV virus levels below 50 copies/mL) but were taking an existing complex drug regimen. A third of participants were taking four or more antiretroviral pills a day, with a maximum of 11 pills a day.
