<2> THC’s Impact on Memory: A Study Finds False Memories Created by Cannabis Use

<3> THC’s Effect on Memory Systems

Research has long suggested that THC, the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, can impair memory. However, a recent study has revealed a more complex and concerning issue: THC can create false memories in users. This phenomenon was observed in a controlled experiment where participants who used cannabis were more likely to recall words that were never shown to them.

WHO defines substance use disorders as ‘characterized by the use of one or more substances in a manner that is detrimental to the individual’s health, social functioning, or relationships.’ The study’s findings suggest that cannabis use can lead to a type of substance use disorder related to memory.

Nature published a study in 2021 that found THC can alter the brain’s reward system, which can lead to addiction. The study’s findings are consistent with the idea that THC can create false memories in users.
