Apple has officially announced the next generation of its popular item tracker, the AirTag, bringing significant hardware improvements designed to make locating lost possessions faster and more intuitive. Addressing feedback from the original model, the tech giant has focused on two primary areas of enhancement: audio output and connection range.

Turning Up the Volume

One of the most requested features for the new AirTag was an improvement in sound quality and volume. Apple has re-engineered the internal speaker system to produce a significantly louder chime. This upgrade is specifically designed to help users locate items that are buried deep within couch cushions, hidden inside heavy luggage, or left in noisy environments where the previous model’s sound could easily be drowned out.

The increased volume ensures that when a user triggers the “Play Sound” feature via the Find My app, the audio cue is distinct and audible from a greater distance, reducing the time spent searching for hidden items.

Extended Range and Precision Finding

Beyond audio improvements, the new AirTag boasts an upgraded Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. This hardware update allows for “Precision Finding” to operate over longer distances. Previously, users had to be relatively close to the tag for their iPhone to display the directional arrows and distance indicators. With the new model, the transceiver establishes a connection from further away, guiding users to their lost keys or wallets across larger open spaces or through more obstacles.

This extended range enhances the overall utility of the Find My network, making the transition from general map tracking to precise, close-range location tracking much smoother.

A Refined User Experience

While the exterior design retains the iconic, minimalist aesthetic that users are familiar with, these internal upgrades represent a substantial leap in functionality. By combining a louder audio alert with a more powerful tracking radius, Apple aims to solidify the AirTag’s position as the market leader in the personal tracking device sector. These updates reflect Apple’s commitment to refining its accessory ecosystem to better serve the practical needs of its user base.
