<2> Sudan Conflict: UN Team Warns of Genocide
<3> Atrocities in Darfur Region
The United Nations has warned that the Sudan conflict has the “hallmarks of genocide,” following a fact-finding mission to the Darfur region. The mission, led by Mona Rishmawi, concluded that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out targeted killings, sexual violence, starvation, torture, and “systematic humiliation” of non-Arab communities with the goal of wiping them out.
<3> Evidence of Genocide
Evidence collected by the mission shows that the RSF acted with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Zaghawa and Fur communities in El Fasher. These atrocities have been ongoing since the conflict escalated in 2023, with an estimated 150,000 people killed and 14 million displaced.
<3> History of Conflict
Sudan has been beset by war for two decades, but the conflict escalated in 2023 when the RSF and Sudan’s national army stepped up their battle for control of the country. The RSF, a paramilitary force, has been accused of carrying out atrocities against non-Arab communities in the Darfur region.
