Apple has officially revealed the next generation of its popular item tracker, the AirTag. Building on the success of the original accessory, the updated model promises significant improvements in performance, specifically regarding connectivity range and audio volume, addressing two of the most requested user enhancements.

Powering Precision with Ultra Wideband

The centerpiece of the new AirTag is the inclusion of Apple’s upgraded ultra wideband (UWB) chip. This second-generation silicon allows the device to communicate with iPhones over much greater distances than its predecessor. By leveraging this advanced technology, the new AirTag offers a more robust connection, ensuring that users can locate their items even in challenging environments where the previous model might have struggled.

This hardware upgrade directly powers Apple’s signature “Precision Finding” feature. When a user is in the vicinity of their lost item, their iPhone will utilize a combination of visual cues, haptic feedback, and audio guidance to lead them directly to the device. The upgraded chip ensures that this directional tracking initiates sooner and remains more stable as the user moves toward the target.

Enhanced Audio for Easier Recovery

In addition to the connectivity boost, Apple has re-engineered the AirTag’s audio capabilities. The new model features a better, louder speaker system. This enhancement is designed to make the “Play Sound” feature more effective, particularly when an item is buried deep inside a backpack, stuck between sofa cushions, or located in a noisy environment.

Same Price, Better Performance

Despite the internal hardware upgrades, Apple has maintained the pricing strategy that helped make the original AirTag a ubiquitous accessory. The new AirTag will remain priced at $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack.

By keeping the entry price steady while improving the core utility of the device—specifically range and volume—Apple aims to solidify its dominance in the personal tracking market. The new AirTag represents a refined iteration of an essential tool for travelers and commuters alike.
