<4>Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the UAE and Bahrain have been damaged in drone strikes, disrupting core cloud services and causing “prolonged” outages. The strikes, which occurred in the Middle East conflict with Iran, mark the first time a major U.S. tech company’s data center has been disrupted by military action.

<5>According to an update on AWS’s status page, two of its facilities in the UAE were directly struck, while a drone strike in close proximity to one of its facilities in Bahrain caused physical impact to its infrastructure. The strikes have caused structural damage, disrupted power delivery to AWS’s infrastructure, and in some cases required fire suppression activities that resulted in additional water damage.

<6>AWS is working to restore full service availability as quickly as possible, though it expects recovery to be prolonged given the nature of the physical damage involved. The company has advised customers to back up critical data and shift operations to servers in unaffected AWS regions.
