<2> U.S. manufacturers grow for second straight month, but ‘tariff instability still exists’

<3> American manufacturers experience a rare two-month growth streak in February

<4> According to data released by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), the U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in February for the second consecutive month, marking the first time in a year that the sector has experienced such growth. This uptick in manufacturing activity is a welcome respite for an industry that has been battered by a series of economic headwinds, including rising trade tensions and a decline in global demand.

<5> However, despite this recent growth, manufacturers are still grappling with the impacts of U.S. tariffs on metal imports. The tariffs, which were imposed by the Trump administration in 2018, have led to a significant increase in metal prices, which is weighing heavily on business and sapping customer demand.

<6> “The tariffs are a major concern for manufacturers,” said Bloomberg economist, Tom Kloza. “They’re making it more expensive for companies to produce goods, which is ultimately being passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices.”
