The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has lost a cherished member of its editorial team with the passing of Doug Altman, a renowned statistician who left an indelible mark on the world of medical research. Collins and Deeks, two of his closest colleagues, share their memories and reflections about Doug’s remarkable career and the impact he had on the BMJ.

<3> A Member of the “Hanging Committee”

The BMJ editors knew Doug best through his membership of the “hanging committee,” a group of five individuals responsible for deciding which papers should be published. The committee consisted of two clinicians, two editors, and a statistician, who would meet to discuss 12 papers that had been submitted for publication. Doug joined the committee in about 1980 and remained a member for over 30 years.
