<3>The State of FGM Elimination Efforts

The global community’s efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) are at a critical juncture, with uneven progress and increasing challenges. According to recent estimates, 4.5 million girls are at risk of FGM in 2026 alone, underscoring the urgent need for collective action. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of eliminating FGM by 2030 appears unlikely without a significant shift in political commitment, financing, and momentum in changing social norms.

<3>FGM: A Violation of Human Rights

FGM is defined as the partial or total removal of, or other injury to, the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. This practice offers no health benefits and is associated with immediate and long-term health risks, including bleeding, infections, and complications for sexual, mental, and obstetric health. FGM is reported in at least 94 countries and is internationally recognized as a violation of multiple human rights, including the rights to health, bodily integrity, freedom from violence, and freedom from discrimination.
