<2>It’s Time to Pull the Plug on Plug-in Hybrids
<3>The Rise and Fall of a Fading Technology
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) were once hailed as the future of the automotive industry. They promised to offer the best of both worlds: the fuel efficiency of an electric vehicle and the range of a traditional gasoline-powered car. However, a new study has revealed that PHEVs are rarely charged, leaving many to wonder why automakers are still producing them.
<3>The Problem with PHEVs
Proposal for a study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) found that only 2.5% of PHEV owners charge their vehicles daily, while 75% charge them less than once a week. This is a stark contrast to electric vehicles (EVs), which are charged daily by 45% of owners. The study also found that PHEVs are often used as “gas-guzzlers” with the electric motor turned off, defeating the purpose of the hybrid technology.
<3>The Impact on the Environment
The UCS study also found that PHEVs are not as environmentally friendly as they seem. In fact, they can produce more emissions than traditional gasoline-powered cars in certain scenarios. This
