<2> Babies Exposed to Far More “Forever Chemicals” Before Birth Than Scientists Knew

<3> Prenatal Exposure to PFAS Compounds: A Growing Concern

Research has long suggested that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can have significant health implications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and their unborn babies. A recent study has shed new light on the extent of prenatal exposure to these “forever chemicals,” revealing that babies born in the early 2000s were exposed to far more PFAS compounds in the womb than previously thought.

<4> The Study’s Findings

Using advanced chemical screening on umbilical cord blood, scientists detected 42 different PFAS compounds, including many that standard tests do not routinely check for. This is a significant increase from previous estimates, which suggested that babies were exposed to only a handful of PFAS compounds before birth.

<5> The Sources of PFAS Exposure

PFAS compounds are found in a wide range of common products, including nonstick cookware, food packaging, and stain-resistant fabrics. These chemicals are used to make products more durable and resistant to stains, but they can also build up in the body over time, leading to a range
